The trench coat is arguably one of the most classic pieces you can have in your wardrobe. It’s almost everywhere in old Hollywood films and helped contribute to iconic scenes with Humphrey Bogart in Casablanca (my all-time favorite), Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s, and even Kerry Washington in Scandal. In 2016, Vogue called the trench coat, “the opposite of a statement piece.” Then, why is it so important to have in your rotation? It’s because it has this uncanny ability to be what you need it to be. Dressed up or down, there is no occasion this jacket can’t handle.
Burberry is the clear monarch of the trench coat family, but sadly the steep price doesn’t work with my current teacher and part-time blogger budget. I also have the issue of living in Florida which simply makes it way too warm to wear more than one layer 80% of the time. I’ve currently been living in that other 20% where I suddenly wish I lived farther south to escape the low 40’s and a new jacket seems very tempting.
With all of that being said, I gave myself a $100 budget to find what I was looking for: a classic jacket that will be versatile in Florida weather. I found my answer while out shopping at Nordstrom. This lightweight trench coat from BP, at under $70, fits the bill perfectly. Food for thought, I could have sized down, but opted for my usual size in case of the (very likely) chance I wanted to layer underneath for added warmth. For an even better priced trench, check out this option from Target for just under $40.
I think the trench coat is something that everyone should have, but what do you think? I mean it did take me 26 years to get my own. If you have one, how do you style it? And if not, what keeps you from getting one? Comment below and start the conversation!
